It's the first C&C RTS in 3D, and it has some cool physics effects and map-changing scripted events in the campaign. Despite that, it's still a good game with some neat stuff in there. Not because it isn't good, but because other than the name on the box and being an RTS, there's almost nothing at all related to any of the other C&C games. Generals kinda shouldn't be a Command & Conquer game. There are people who want to recreate that though. I don't think many other games that has done something like that since. It was unique and really fun, but I'm not sure whether it's still active. Each team had a working base with destroyable buildings, and they would do the job they normally do in an RTS. It was an FPS with a layer of RTS blanketing over it. There were also drivable C&C vehicles during the missions. The big thing in Renegade is being able to experience C&C stuff in 3D first-person, which is pretty cool for someone who's played the first C&C. A bit of an arcade shooter, gameplay-wise (this was back when guns haven't discovered gravity, so they just float and spin until someone picks it up). Renegade is a spin-off, being an FPS that follows Havoc, a C&C commando. Compression on the FMVs might be an issue though. Being 2D, all the graphics would not have been aged with technology and still looks great. So resolution/widescreen isn't too much of an issue, although you might not want to play at too high a resolution, lest your infantry become tiny, tiny dots on your screen. If you're only going to play a few of the games, make sure these are in your list.įrom Command & Conquer to Red Alert 2, the games were 2D, pixel-based. These games have aged the best, and they're the best Command & Conquer games (especially Red Alert 2 with Yuri's Revenge).

For units and buildings, a lot of the mainstays of the series are in, in addition to newer units with unique mechanics as well (garrisoning structures, tunneling underground, ice, IFVs, mind control). FMVs are still in, soundtrack is still Frank Klepacki, a lot of the base gameplay mechanics are still there. There's a voxel system in there somewhere, which allows for deformable terrain (although it's less prominent in RA2). Graphics are improved from the older games, like better lighting and particles. There's shift-click waypoints now, better build-queuing, build menus being categorised, hover-over for health, better wall building - all the controls of a modern RTS, really. Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 are newer and have improvements to the UI and controls. I never played much of the expansions (Covert Ops, Counterstrike, Aftermath), but as I remember, they add extra separate missions, and I think either Aftermath or Counterstrike adds extras units (M.A.D. They are otherwise great games though: there are the live-action FMVs that are less cheesy than most other games with live-action FMVs (quite enjoyable, actually) interesting units and buildings (stealth tanks, dogs, harvesting ore/tiberium into refineries and silos, aircraft that had to rebase instead of infinitely flying, spies and engineers for the more underhanded approach, MCVs for base expansion) a campaign that sometimes gave you multiple missions to choose from, which became less pronounced or removed in the later games fantastic soundtrack by Frank Klepacki. Everything is built one-at-a-time, or APCs load one unit at a time, or walls are built one piece at a time, or infantry units sometimes won't fill up the space you've told them to move to. Especially in things like UI and control issues.
